Modern Day Treasure Hunters Discover Giant Emerald in North Carolina

North Carolina Goes Green...Okay, Sort Of...

An unusually large emerald was found on a South Carolina farm just a few weeks ago. The nearly 65-carat stone was given the name Carolina Emperor by its lucky discoverers.

The Emerald was pulled from a pit near some simple rows of southern grown corn, but is being compared to the crown jewels of Russian empress Catherine the Great. The farm which happens to be situated on mineral rich land began charging "treasure hunters" $3/day per shovel to dig through its fields.

The refined stone is reportedly slightly larger than a US quarter but about as heavy as a AA battery. North Carolina is (not so well) known for its emerald rich soil, but last months find presented a gem of a find even for experienced miners.

Fun Fact:

Other US states are known for their gems. Maine mines often yield aquamarine and amethyst, while Montana is known for its beautiful sapphires - Idaho, for its star garnets, and Arkansas (yes you read that correctly) for its diamonds.
